Where Does Your Money Go When You Order Flowers Online?
Why ordering directly from a local Hilliard floral studio can mean more of your budget goes toward the flowers themselves.
Written by A Ray of Sunshine Floral
Most people assume that when they spend $100 on flowers, the local florist receives that $100 to create and deliver the arrangement.
Unfortunately, that is not always what happens.
Many of the flower websites that appear at the top of a Google search are not actually local flower shops. They are large floral wire services or order-gathering websites. They accept your order, collect the payment, keep a portion of it through fees and commissions, and then send the remaining order to a local florist to fulfill.
By the time the order reaches the flower shop, the florist may be expected to create the arrangement, pay for the flowers and vase, cover the labor, and deliver it while receiving considerably less than what the customer originally paid.
Why This Matters
Flowers are expensive. Vases, supplies, delivery vehicles, labor, and the flowers themselves all carry real costs.
When part of a customer’s budget is taken before the order ever reaches the flower shop, the local florist is left trying to create something that still looks and feels like the arrangement the customer purchased, but with less money available to do it.
The customer may believe they purchased a $100 arrangement, while the florist responsible for making it is working with a much smaller budget. This can create disappointment for the customer and make it increasingly difficult for independent flower shops to remain profitable.
It is not that local florists do not want to provide a beautiful arrangement. We absolutely do. We are simply being asked to fulfill an order without receiving the full amount that was paid for it.
The Website May Look Local, But It Might Not Be
Some flower-ordering websites create pages for individual cities, using phrases such as “Hilliard flower delivery” or “your local Hilliard florist.”
That does not necessarily mean the company has a flower shop in Hilliard.
Before placing an order, take a moment to look for a physical address and a local About page. You can also search the business name separately to see whether it is an actual local floral studio or a national company accepting orders from across the country.
What Happens When You Order Directly?
When you order directly from a local florist, there are fewer people between you and the person creating your flowers.
You can speak directly with the shop, ask questions, share preferences, and explain what you would like the arrangement to feel like. The florist also has more of the original budget available for the flowers, design, and delivery.
That does not mean every stem of the arrangement equals the full purchase price. A flower shop still has labor, supplies, rent, delivery, processing fees, and other operating costs. But your purchase is directly supporting the business that is actually making and delivering your gift.
Why We Don’t Expect Every Arrangement to Look Identical
Flowers are seasonal and naturally vary in size, color, and availability. Even flowers of the same variety will not look exactly alike.
We would rather create an arrangement using the freshest and most beautiful flowers available than force a design to match a stock photograph with flowers that may not be at their best.
This is also why designer’s-choice arrangements can be such a good option. They give the florist the freedom to choose what looks best that day while still following the requested occasion, style, and color preferences.
Supporting Local Flower Shops
Independent flower shops are part of the communities they serve. We deliver to local homes, businesses, schools, churches, funeral homes, and care facilities. We also purchase supplies, employ local people, support community events, and build relationships with the families who trust us with important moments.
Ordering directly helps keep those shops sustainable.
This is not about making anyone feel guilty for how they have ordered flowers in the past. Most people simply do not know how floral wire services work. Their websites are often designed to feel local, and the ordering process is quick and convenient.
We just believe customers deserve to understand where their money is going.
